Today I have another song for you. It's a fairly well known song I would imagine, and was recently featured in a popular zombie movie. The song is 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' by Metallica.
This song goes along with the previous IotD, where I was discussing the relentless, slow march of death that is the artillery barrage. This song differs slightly because it evokes different images, but I'll explain how they connect in a bit.
The opening music of the song is actually the most important part for me. It makes me think of large numbers of soldiers marching in formation toward war. They are not fighting yet, so there is no real violence or adrenaline, but they represent an overwhelming force. It is the inevitable, slow, steady approach of doom, the same as the slowly advancing impact of artillery shells as they bombard your lines.
Both are shows of force that can bring not swift death, but certain and slow. These aren't the stealthy ambush of a predator, the sure shot of a sniper, the quick assault of a commando team. You know it is coming, you even know where it is coming from. It just doesn't help you. It is this idea that has been churning around in my mind as of late. A juggernaut that simply bulls forward, trusting in it's strength to win out over anything the enemy might do to counter it.
